Local means local.

The Breakwater extension has no user accounts and does not collect, sell, transmit, or profile personal information. It uses no extension analytics, advertising, tracking pixels, or telemetry.

Data on your device

The extension stores configuration, selected sources, custom RSS/Atom names and URLs, feed-derived change records, reading state, migration notes, and an optional license key in chrome.storage.local. An optional Slack incoming webhook is also stored locally. Configuration exports include custom feed definitions but exclude browser permissions, notes, reading history, license information, and Slack webhook URLs.

Direct connections

Breakwater connects directly from the browser to ten fixed core changelog hosts. Pro users may grant access to the exact origin of a selected extended release feed or custom HTTPS RSS/Atom feed. The browser never grants the declared optional HTTPS scope wholesale; Breakwater requests one required origin from a user action and revokes it when no selected source needs it. Breakwater also connects to Polar's public License Key API when a user activates Pro and to hooks.slack.com only after the user supplies a webhook and grants that permission. Polar receives the pasted key, public Breakwater product identifiers, and a random browser activation label/ID; no administrative token is shipped. Feed hosts and services may receive standard network metadata under their own policies. Breakwater operates no server and receives none of these requests.

Content safety and deletion

Feed HTML is converted to plain text and never rendered. Custom feeds use HTTPS public domains, omit credentials, reject redirects, and are limited to 10 seconds and 5 MiB. Users can remove a custom source, revoke its permission, delete all local data in Settings, or remove the extension.

Optional website measurement

The public Change Radar reads a cached, read-only index from signals.breakwaters.dev. The independent monitor polls official public developer feeds, stores source timestamps and deduplicated entries, and receives no extension configuration, license key, account data, browser identifier, or page contents. Every entry links to its official upstream source.

This marketing website offers optional, consent-based Google Analytics measurement. It is disabled by default, honors Do Not Track, and loads no analytics service unless you select “Allow analytics.” If allowed, it measures page views and aggregate install, pricing, and checkout interactions. Advertising signals and Google Signals remain disabled. Your choice is stored in this browser's local storage. Declining has no effect on the website, extension, pricing, or support.

Campaign links may contain the standard labels utm_source, utm_medium, utm_campaign, and utm_content. When all four are present and use safe campaign characters, the website carries those same labels to Chrome Web Store installation links so aggregate Store reporting can credit the original campaign. It adds no user, device, or session identifier, cookie, fingerprint, or referrer value; incomplete or malformed labels are not forwarded.

Anonymous feedback after removal

After the extension has already been removed, Chrome or Edge may open /uninstall with only the store name and extension version. That page writes one aggregate view to our Cloudflare Analytics Engine dataset and, only if you submit the form, one closed-choice reason. It sends no extension configuration, account or license data, email address, free text, cookie, or user/device identifier. Cloudflare processes standard network metadata to deliver the page under its privacy terms, but that metadata is not written to the feedback dataset.
